Neurons Beyond the Textbook

Education resources from the Allen Institute: New neuron morphology lesson materials

In this new lesson, students will learn about the concept of cell types and how they are defined, gain a more realistic perspective of neuron morphology, and develop a deeper understanding of how neuron features are analyzed. Divided into three sections of increasing difficulty and complexity, this lesson has applications for students from advanced high school through advanced college.

Brain Awareness Week 2022

Join us for Brain Awareness Week: Understanding the Cellular Roots of Alzheimer’s Disease

To mark Brain Awareness Week, the Allen Institute for Brain Science will host a public webinar on current research in Alzheimer’s Disease and cell types. This webinar is geared towards the general public and is also suitable for students with little or no neuroscience experience. Educators and student groups at undergraduate colleges, community colleges, and undergraduate programs of universities are invited to apply for a virtual neuroscience seminar for your students. An Allen Institute for Brain Science scientist will present on open data resources and current research at the Institute. We strongly encourage applications from educators and student groups at underserved institutions or supporting underserved populations.

Play our new Brain Bingo game

Play our Brain Bingo for a fun activity with advanced high school or college students with basic neuroscience knowledge. Students are challenged to identify neuroanatomy, cell features, and important concepts in neuroscience from images and clues to match to their bingo boards. We also have Cell Biology Bingo on cell structures and concepts.

New cell biology video lessons

We have updated our Introduction to Cell Biology lesson collection with videos of Allen Institute for Cell Science scientists giving the presentations. These videos can be viewed in class with students or by independent learners. "Healthy Cells, Healthy Bodies" introduces the connection between cell health and human health for students in grades 6-8. "Introduction to Microscopy in Biology" includes an interactive activity for high schoolers demonstrating how to analyze image data of human cells using one of our open datasets.
